EFL Cup: Aston Villa, Leeds United through to third round

All five Championship teams progressed to the third round of the EFL Cup after Wednesday evening’s action.

Aston Villa held on to beat Colchester United 2-1.

Scott Hogan opened the scoring in the sixth minute before a Frankie Kent own goal doubled the lead.

Kent made amends before half time by scoring in the right end but Villa held on in the second half to scrape through.

It was an easier night for Leeds United who beat Port Vale 4-1.

Samu Saiz scored a hat-trick before Caleb Ekuban completed the scoring. Michael Tonge had equalised in the first half.

Sheffield United came from behind to beat Walsall 3-2.

Amadou Bakayoko gave Walsall a half-time lead but a Kory Roberts own goal and goals from Nathan Thomas and Danny Lafferty saw United through. Erhun Oztumer scored a late consolation from the penalty spot.

Elsewhere, Burton Albion needed an 86th-minute penalty winner to beat Oldham Athletic 3-2.

Luke Varney had given the Brewers the lead before Paul Green and a Craig Davies spot kick gave Oldham the lead.

That lead only last for three minutes though when Matty Lund levelled before Lucas Akins scored the winner from 12 yards.

Bolton Wanderers also needed a late winner at Crewe Alexandra.

Chris Porter gave Crewe the lead on the verge of half time but Adam Armstrong and Derik Osede struck in the final 20 minutes to secure a 2-1 win for Bolton.
