Derbyshire have defeated Yorkshire with five balls to spare to start their T20 Blast campaign.

It was both teams first game in the tournament after Yorkshire’s match against Nottinghamshire was rained out yesterday and Derbyshire chased down 164 to win by five wickets.

Jordan Thompson top-scored for Yorkshire with 50 off 28 balls before he was caught behind by Daryn Smit and Jonathan Tattersall added an unbeaten 39. Opener Adam Lyth scored 21 in the opening 3.2 overs before he was caught off Ravi Rampaul as Yorkshire finished their innings on 164-8.

Derbyshire captain Billy Godleman put in a man of the match performance and stayed in for the whole innings to rack up an unbeaten 70 from 56 balls.

The Derbyshire innings got off to a horror start though when Finn Hudson-Prentice was caught for eight in the first over.

Leus du Plooy added 30 runs before Matt Critchley came in at the end of the innings to hit two boundaries and score a crucial 14 runs off just six balls to take Derbyshire over the finish line.
