David Goffin reaches Wimbledon quarter-final by beating Fernando Verdasco

Belgium’s David Goffin has beaten Spaniard Fernando Verdasco in four sets in the Wimbledon fourth round.

Goffin came through 7-6 2-6 6-3 6-4 in three hours and one minute to set up a quarter-final tie against Novak Djokovic or Ugo Humbert.

The pair went toe-to-toe in the opening set before Verdasco failed to capitalise on a 6-3 lead in the tie-break. Goffin had to save five set points in total in the tie-break, before a set point at 9-8 was saved by Verdasco. Eventually, at 10-9 and on serve, Goffin finally took the opening set.

Verdasco was dominant in the second set though. He broke twice and saved two break points himself on the way to levelling.

It was Goffin’s day though. First, he broke towards the end of the third set to take the lead and held serve throughout the fourth to take it 6-4 and reach his first Wimbledon quarter-final.
