Fifteen-year-old sensation Coco Gauff has been knocked out of Wimbledon in the fourth round by former world number one Simona Halep.

Gauff, who overcame former champions Venus Williams in the first round and wowed the Centre Court crowd by beating Polona Hercog in the third round, eventually fell 6-3 6-3 to the 2014 semi-finalist.

The American was broken in the opening game but replied instantly to level. Two break points then came her way but Halep held and then broke to take a 3-2 lead.

At 5-3, Gauff was serving to stay in the first set but was broken as Halep took the lead.

Halep won the first two games of the second set before Gauff replied, but another break for Halep put her in control.

Gauff did save two match points when serving to stay in the match but Halep held serve on the next game to confirm her place in the quarter-final.

The Romanian will play Shuai Zhang in the quarter-final, who beat Dayana Yastremska earlier in the day.
