Championship Roundup: Wolves beat Middlesbrough, Sheffield United win

Wolverhampton Wanderers have beaten Middlesbrough on the opening day of the Championship.

Both teams are aiming to be in the promotion mix at the end of the season, but it was Wolves who triumphed after debutant Leo Bonatini scored the only goal of the game after 33 minutes.

Sheffield United won by a single goal against Brentford on their return to the Championship. Last season’s League 1 champions took all three points thanks to Billy Sharp’s first-half goal.

The late kick-off featured Aston Villa and Hull City. John Terry made his debut but could not help Villa who were held to a 1-1 draw. Gabriel Agbonlahor opened the scoring after just seven minutes but Jarrod Bowen scored his first senior goal in the second half to share the points.

Queens Park Rangers defeated last season’s playoff finalists Reading 2-0. Conor Washington scored either side of half time.

Bristol City’s record signing Famara Diedhiou scored on his debut as they beat Barnsley 3-1. Bobby Reid scored twice before Ryan Hedges grabbed a consolation in injury time.

Cardiff City travelled to Burton Albion were the only away team to take three points. Kenneth Zohore scored the only goal of the game in the 87th minute.

Elsewhere, Preston beat Sheffield Wednesday 1-0, Ipswich Town defeated Birmingham City by the same scoreline and Fulham played out a 1-1 draw against Norwich City.

Nottingham Forest defeated Millwall and Sunderland drew with Derby County on Friday night.

Leeds United meet Bolton Wanderers on Sunday.
