Cardiff Blues beat Gloucester in European Rugby Challenge Cup final after second-half comeback

Cardiff Blues have overturned a 14-point halftime deficit to win the European Rugby Challenge Cup after beating Gloucester 31-30.

A last-minute penalty from Jarrod Evans saw Cardiff take the trophy in dramatic fashion after the team had come back from 20-6 down at halftime.

Henry Trinder and Mark Atkinson ran in for Gloucester in the first half with Billy Twelvetrees adding six more points from the boot.

Two Evans penalties was all Cardiff had to show after a poor first half.

The Pro14 side came back in the second half though. Tries from Tomos Williams and Garyn Smith, as well as another three points from Evans, gave the Blues an eight-point lead.

Gloucester regained a seven-point lead though after James Hanson crossed before Twelvetrees scored another penalty.

Lewis Ludlow was sin-binned in the 74th minute and Blaine Scully scored with four minutes remaining, but Evans’ missed conversion meant Gloucester stayed two points up.

A last-minute penalty was converted by Evans to complete Cardiff’s remarkable comeback.

Cardiff had last won the European Rugby Challenge Cup in 2010.
