American Sam Querrey has beaten Britain’s Jay Clarke in straight set to progress to the second round of the Fever-Tree Championships at Queen’s.

Clarke, ranked 223 in the world, was playing in his first ever ATP Tour match after gaining a wildcard entry into the tournament and proved useful against a player ranked 210 places above him.

Querry’s class shone through though, and he won the first three games of the opening set on the way to taking the lead.

Clarke held serve at the start of the second set but four successive games saw Querrey through.

The 30-year-old will play Stanislaw Wawrinka in the next round, who beat British number two Cameron Norrie earlier in the day.
