Ben Woodburn debut goal gives Wales victory

Ben Woodburn scored four minutes into his Wales debut as they beat Austria 1-0.

The 17-year-old striker came on with 10 minutes to spare and netted with his first touch to keep Wales’ hopes of World Cup qualification alive.

Aaron Ramsey could have given Wales the lead in the 10th minute when he was put through by Sam Vokes but his shot went over the bar before Martin Harnik headed wide from a corner at the other end.

Austria began to dominate possession but did not offer too much of a threat going forward. Wayne Hennessey came out to clear a possible Marko Arnautovic break and David Alaba saw his shot blocked.

The West Ham United striker had the best chance of the first half when he was put through one-on-one by Julian Baumgartlinger but his shot from the left went just over the bar.

Marcel Sabitzer had two chances to break the deadlock. First, he struck at Hennessey before dragging a shot wide of the far post.

Wales came out well in the second half. Ramsey headed wide before seeing a shot blocked from Gareth Bale’s free kick.

Bale, who was isolated in the first half, went close on the hour mark, forcing Heinz Lindner into a diving save to keep out his curling 25-yarder.

Ramsey then went close with a long-range shot that was tipped wide.

Seventeen-year-old Liverpool striker Woodburn was introduced with 20 minutes to spare and he lit up Cardiff City Stadium four minutes into his debut. He took down a poor clearance before rifling it into the bottom corner from 25 yards.

Ashley Williams pulled off a crucial block in the closing stages from an Arnautovic shot.

Bale nearly added a second in the 93rd minute but his overhead kick was saved.
