Aviva Premiership: Gloucester, Newcastle win on opening night

Gloucester and Newcastle Falcons have both won on the opening night of the Aviva Premiership season.

Newcastle hammered Worcester Warriors 35-8 while Gloucester defeated Exeter Chiefs 28-21.

A fifth-minute try by Alex Tait was the pick of the action in the first half as Newcastle took a 10-3 lead into half time.

Josh Adams unconverted try made it a two-point game in the 47th minute but three tries and two penalties saw Newcastle run away with the match in the final 40 minutes.

Rob Vickers and Kyle Cooper crossed before Juan Pablo Socino scored to secure the bonus-point victory.

Gloucester needed a last-minute Jason Woodward try to defeat reigning champions Exeter.

The teams shared four first-half tries as Sam Simmonds put Exeter in the lead twice, only to be cancelled out by two Jeremy Thrush tries.

Gareth Steenson was sin-binned just after the restart and Ben Morgan took advantage to put Gloucester into the lead for the first time.

Olly Woodburn levelled the score with 10 minutes to play but Woodward crossed in the corner to secure the victory for Gloucester.
