Austria book place in last-16 but Ukraine made to wait

Austria have qualified for the second round at Euro 2020 after a 1-0 win over Group C rivals Ukraine.

The result means that Ukraine will need to wait until the other groups have concluded after finishing third in the group on three points.

Christoph Baumgartner scored the only goal of the game early on when he turned in David Alaba’s cross just a minute after needing treatment from the physio.

Mykola Shaparenko had a good chance to level before halftime but Daniel Bachmann made the save.

It was Austria who were having the better of the game though. Konrad Laimer tested Georgi Bushchan before Marko Arnautovic shot wide.

Austria could have extended their lead in the second half but Xaver Schlager’s shot was stopped.

Ukraine failed to threaten in the second half. Roman Yaremchuk shot wide late on and Oleksandr Zinchenko was stopped by the Austria defence in stoppage time.
