Arsenal scrape into Carabao Cup semi-final after Danny Welbeck goal

Danny Welbeck scored the only goal of the game as Arsenal defeated West Ham United in the Carabao Cup quarter-final.

The striker bundled the ball in the first half in a match where West Ham failed to threaten the Arsenal net.

With wholesale changes made by both teams, the first half lacked quality. Arsenal looked the most likely team to score but crosses from Theo Walcott and Welbeck were easily dealt with. Welbeck then saw the first shot of the match blocked.

The match did come to life just before the break though. Sead Kolasinac’s cross found Walcott unmarked in the area but the forward headed wide.

Welbeck did finally break the deadlock in the 42nd minute when he bundled the ball in from close range after Mathieu Debuchy’s cross.

Aaron Cresswell came close to equalising midway through the second half but his free-kick went narrowly wide of the right post.

Andy Carroll and Diafra Sakho came off the West Ham bench with 20 minutes remaining but were unable to galvanise their team in attack.

Late on, Joe Willock weaved through the West Ham defence but his shot was blocked.

Willock was at the centre of another attack with five minutes remaining. He went past Winston Reid before finding Walcott in the area but the shot was blocked. Mohamed Elneny was first to the rebound but the Egyptian failed to get a shot away.

West Ham sent some long balls into the Arsenal area in stoppage time but the Gunners held out to secure the victory.
