The pair, dubbed Murrena, had captured the public’s heart over the last five days but doubles specialists Soares and Melichar eventually prevailed 6-3 4-6 6-2.

Murray and Williams had a chance to take the lead in the opener but failed to convert a break point at 3-3. They were made to pay in the next game, broken by Soares and Melichar before they served for the set.

The second set went to serve until the very end, when Murray and Williams established a 0-40 lead and took the set.

Soares and Melichar really showed that they deserved their first seeding in the deciding set. A superb team effort saw them break twice on the way to a 4-0 lead. Murray and Williams held their final two service games but were unable to claw the score back as Soares and Melichar confirmed their place in the quarter-final.
