Aberdeen exit Europa League after defeat to Apollon Limassol

Aberdeen have failed to qualify for the Europa League group stages for the fourth consecutive season after a 3-2 aggregate loss against Cypriot side Apollon Limassol.

The Dons took a 2-1 lead into the second leg but goals from Andre Schembri and Emilio Zelaya saw Apollon win 2-0 on the night.

Schembri opened the scoring after 17 minutes, scrambling the ball in from six yards after Anton Maglica’s cross.

Aberdeen struggled to gain a foothold on the match. Ryan Christie’s free kick called goalkeeper Do Vale into action for the only time in the first half.

Kenny McLean nearly levelled after the break but his shot was cleared after rounding the goalkeeper.

Apollon doubled their lead in the 86th minute when a counter attack left Aberdeen short at the back. Marios Stylianou’s shot was turned onto the bar by Joe Lewis but Zelaya was on hand to finish the move.
