Kyle Edmund advances after Nikoloz Basilashvili five-setter

Kyle Edmund battled 39-degree heat to progress to the last-16 of the Australian Open after a five-set win over Nikoloz Basilashvili.

The Brit needed to come from behind to beat his Georgian opponent 7-6 3-6 4-6 6-0 7-5.

Edmund was broken in the first game of the match but levelled at 2-2 before the set went to a tie-break. Seven points in a row, four against Basilashvili’s serve, sealed the opening set.

The world number 49 looked like he would go two sets up when he broke early in the second set but Basilashvili took the sixth and eighth games to win 6-3.

Basilashvili needed to save four break points to go 3-1 up in the third set on the way to a 6-4 win.

A 20-minute long game proved crucial for Edmund, who went 2-0 up in the fourth set. After 15 deuces and seven break points saved by Basilashvili, Edmund finally converted the eighth break point.

The 23-year-old then broke twice more on the way to 6-0.

In the deciding set, both players saved break points on the way to 5-5. Edmund then held and broke Basilashvili in the 12th game to progress to the fourth round.

Edmund will play world number 76 Andreas Seppi in the next round.
