Dele Alli, Ben Davies help Tottenham Hotspur beat Newcastle United

Tottenham Hotspur have beaten Newcastle United 2-0 in their first game of the Premier League season.

Goals from Dele Alli and Ben Davies secured the win after Newcastle captain Jonjo Shelvey was sent off for a stamp in the 48th minute.

Newcastle started strongly with Dwight Gayle’s pace causing problems for the Tottenham back line. The first chance fell to the striker but he could only send the ball over the bar.

Tottenham nearly gave away a penalty after 16 minutes when Kyle Walker-Peters tripped Gayle but the flag was up and the striker was offside.

Spurs began to dominate possession through the midfield duo of Christian Eriksen and Mousa Dembele, and Harry Kane should have done better with a header from Eriksen’s free kick.

Eriksen could have opened the scoring himself a few minutes later but he shot wide of the target from the edge of the box.

Alli and Eriksen both saw long-range efforts save by Rob Elliot at the end of the half.

The game shot into life after the restart when Shelvey was sent off for a needless stamp on the foot of Alli.

Harry Kane should have put Spurs in front three minutes later when he broke clear of the defensive line to collect a lofted through ball but the striker shot straight into the legs of Elliot from close range.

Alli did make Newcastle pay on the hour mark. Eriksen’s cross was not dealt with and Alli outstretched his leg to volley into the bottom corner.

The lead could have been doubled with their next attack but Kane was again denied by Elliot.

Ben Davies did add a second with 20 minutes remaining, taking the ball off Eriksen’s feet to power the ball past Elliot.

Eric Dier nearly added a third from 25 yards before Kane hit the post in stoppage time
