Championship: Norwich City win, Sunderland held by Sheffield Wednesday

Norwich City have beaten Queens Park Rangers 2-0 to pick up their first win of the season.

Nelson Oliveira opened the scoring in the 48th minute before Harrison Reed doubled the scoring in the closing stages.

Conor Washington had chances to score for QPR but was denied by the Norwich defence. He could have equalised with 20 minutes remaining but shot straight at Angus Gunn from three yards.

Sunderland have moved into the play-off places after a 1-1 draw against Sheffield Wednesday.

Youngster George Honeyman gave Sunderland a fourth-minute lead and it looked like the Black Cats would hold firm for another win.

David Jones equalised in the 70th minute though to rescue a point for Wednesday.

In Tuesday’s matches, Cardiff City went top of the table with a 2-0 win over Sheffield United. Sean Morrison headed in from Joe Ralls’ corner before Nathaniel Mendez-Laing scored his fourth goal of the season.

Wolverhampton Wanderers and Ipswich Town are the only other teams with a 100% record.

Ruben Neves opened the scoring for Wolves, who defeated Hull City 3-2, with a 30-yard shot into the top corner. Michael Dawson then headed in for Hull but Diogo Jota gave Wolves a 2-1 lead.

Nouha Dicko scored in the 90th minute before David Meyler scored a consolation from the penalty spot.

Jordan Spence headed in an 88th-minute winner as Ipswich beat Millwall 4-3. Jed Wallace gave Millwall the lead after just 44 seconds but Joe Garner levelled the score in the fourth minute.

Martin Waghorn scored twice before half time, either side of a Millwall goal by Aiden O’Brien.

Tom Elliott equalised with 10 minutes remaining but Spence’s goal secured the points for Ipswich.

Aston Villa’s poor start to the season continued with a 2-1 loss at Reading. Glenn Whelan scored an own goal before Mo Barrow doubled the Royals’ lead. Conor Hourihane pulled a goal back in the 87th minute but it was too little too late for Villa.

Brentford’s Griffin Park was host to seven goals on Saturday and the locals saw four more on Tuesday. Bristol City took the lead in the fifth minute but second-half goals from Ollie Watkins and Neal Maupay put the Bees ahead.

Bristol City left it late though when Bobby Reid stepped up to equalise in the 98th minute.

Elsewhere on Tuesday, Barnsley got their first win of the season after a 2-1 win against Nottingham Forest, Britt Assombalonga scored both goals as Middlesbrough beat Burton Albion and Matej Vydra’s penalty led Derby County to a 1-0 win over Preston North End.

Leeds United versus Fulham and Birmingham City’s match against Bolton Wanderers both ended in a goalless draw.
