Bristol City, Derby County play out goalless draw

Bristol City have ended their five-game losing run after a 0-0 draw at Derby County in the Championship.

The result means that Cardiff City can move level on points with second-placed Derby if they win against Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

Bristol City should have taken the lead in the first half but Jame Paterson’s shot went over the bar from eight yards after he was unmarked.

Matej Vydra then had an opportunity to put Derby in front but his free-kick was brilliantly saved by Frank Fielding.

From the resulting corner, Curtis Davies directed a header towards goal but Aden Flint cleared the ball off the line.

Another Derby free kick came close to breaking the deadlock before halftime. This time, Johnny Russell’s powerful effort bounced off the crossbar.

Fielding was again called into action before the break, keeping out Richard Keogh’s close-range shot.

The Bristol City goalkeeper was replaced by Luke Steele at halftime after suffering an injury, and the substitute did well to keep out Vydra’s shot in the 50th minute.

Steele made another great save 14 minutes later. Russell found Tom Lawrence inside the penalty area but Steele tipped the shot over the bar.

Again Steele was called into action and again Steele pulled off a marvellous save, this time turning the ball behind off Vydra’s shot.

Bristol City nearly stealed a win in stoppage time but Korey Smith’s low drive went just wide.
