British number one Johanna Konta has qualified for the second round of the Australian Open after defeating American Madison Brengle in straight sets.

The ninth seed won 6-3 6-1 and will meet world number 123 Bernarda Pera on Thursday.

Konta broke twice to make it 5-2 in the opening set but failed to convert a set point with her next service game.

With Brengle serving to stay in the set, Konta broke to love to take the lead.

The 26-year-old eased through the final set and raced into a 5-1 lead.

Brengle made one final stand with Konta serving for the match, saving three match points, but Konta prevailed to take the win in 68 minutes.

Konta is now the only Brit remaining in the ladies singles, after Heather Watson was beaten by Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva 5-7 6-7.

Watson was broken in the first set to give Putintseva a 6-5 lead before serving out the set.

A crucial break at 6-5 down in the second set forced a tie-break, and Watson failed to convert a set point at 6-5. Putintseva won the next three points to secure a tie against Ana Bogdan in the next round.
