Aberdeen thump St Mirren to reach Scottish Cup fifth round

Aberdeen have beaten St Mirren 4-1 to progress to the fifth round of the Scottish Cup.

Adam Rooney opened the scoring from the penalty before Ryan Christie scored twice before halftime.

Gary Mackay-Steven scored a stunning fourth goal at the start of the second half to finish the Scottish Championship side off.

Rooney’s seventh-minute penalty gave Aberdeen the lead after Stelios Demetriou fouled Greg Stewart.

Lewis Morgan then set up Josh Magennis but his shot was parried away by Aberdeen goalkeeper Joe Lewis.

With 17 minutes on the clock, Mackay-Steven’s cutback found Christie unmarked to double the Dons lead.

Gavin Reilly pulled a goal back eight minutes later. Morgan’s shot was parried into the path of Reilly to finish.

Christie netted his second goal of the afternoon in the 33rd minute, leaping highest to head home Shaleum Logan’s cross.

Mackay-Steven made it four just after the restart when he sent a superb strike into the top corner, and Aberdeen could have extended their lead even further when Rooney was denied.

Niall McGinn, who had come off the bench to make his second Aberdeen debut, nearly scored but his scissor kick went narrowly wide.

Christie could have a hat-trick towards the end but his dink towards goal was heading wide. Rooney reached the ball first but Stevie May got in his way.
